dear pastor,
02.01.05 (12:15 am)   [edit]

hello, currently my family and i are searching for a new church "home". allow me to tell you a little about us. we are committed christians. i have been saved for 25 years and my wife has been saved for 15. we have three children whom we have instructed in the faith and our oldest has been saved by grace, and we are currently praying for our 2 younger children to come to saving faith by the grace of God.

we have been very active in our 2 previous churches. we have ministered in music, and teaching children and teen-agers. we have been involved with missions work, and we currently find our best ministry opportunities in our work places.

we are reformed, but not dogmatic. we are not cessationist, but rather hold an open but very very cautious approach to the miraculous gifts. we are well versed theologically, and are able to discuss out theological differences without arguing about them. we know what the essentials of christianity are and we know what they are not.

here are a few things we are not looking for in a new church:

a country club where we must win friends and impress others

a multi-million dollar building that is used a few times a week

paid musicians that make worship of God a concert to listen to

songs with lyrics that could be sung to a boyfriend or girlfriend

a place where we have to wear name tags so others will remember our names

a leadership that runs a business rather than ministering to a body of believers

huge multi-media sermon events

feel good theology, self help phyco-bable, or purpose driven anything (except for the new tablecloth and napkin sets)

ranting against the horrible sins of our day (homosexuality, abortion, and liberal democrats)

here are the things we are looking for:

authenticity

genuine concern and action for and in our community

sound theologically correct teaching

a pastor who will care for us and forge a relationship with us that may take years to mature

a worship service that is God centered

a place where the main concern is not how much money you give, but rather if you are becoming more like Christ.

ranting against the horrible sins of our day (selfishness, greed, apathy)

and finally a place that knows grace and that all of us are on the same level playing field, we are all sinners in need of a savior, there are no good christians or bad christians just christians.

although there are many other things we are looking for, this is what we need.

i anxiously await your reply, your fellow servant of Christ,

shayno

chili cook-off
01.30.05 (11:24 am)   [edit]

well, for the third year in a row my buddy lupe and i have wone the annual dallas theological seminary chili cook-off.  this year there were more entries than ever (14) and we won for best presentation and best overall.

i am very proud of this accomplishment.  it might seem petty, but since this is a recipe that has 17 year old roots and has won cook-offs in 2 states i think i have the right to brag.

no i do not give out the recipe, but i can tell you this, if you plan on entering a chili cook-off please bring some heat with you.  most of the chili that i have competed against is very good, but it is sweat, a lot of flavor, but no heat.  you gots to have at least a little kick.

one more little note there was a opponent this year that ground corn from his fathers farm and made cornbread out of it.  man it was super great cornbread.  it was a little sweat but not like a cake, had great texture and was plain yummy.  if i were a judge i would have given him a prize just for the greatness of that cornbread.  just thinking about it right now makes my mouth water.

spongebob is gay!
01.28.05 (3:43 pm)   [edit]

i can see it plainly now.  who else would live in a pineapple under the sea?  ( a veiled reference to the sanfransico area) it all makes perfect sense now.  oh, yeah and he works cooking crabby-patties (a well know slang term for older grumpy homosexuals).  haha it should have been so obvious to all of us by now. spongebob is also yellow (an obvious reference to one of the colors in the rainbow, the universal sign of homosexuals) .

thank you dr. dobson, now my children are safe from the militant homosexual agenda.  next week i hope you expose bob the builder and his fetish for mechanical things.  who else but a pervert would surround himself with trucks and cement mixers, and he wears a leather tool belt, hmm wonder what that for wink wink. go get those bastards and keep us all safe.

you know what i hate?
01.15.05 (9:03 am)   [edit]
being called a fundamentalist becasue i am a christian. it just isn't so.

i believe in right and wrong, absolute truth, and the Bible. I also believe in grey area's, relative truth, and the encylopedia.

i am neither ignorant, nor brainwashed. i have studied for myself and i am educated not indoctrinalized.

why then, would anyone put the lable fundamentalist on me? because it is a common lable atached to all christians by secularists. it is so easy to lump us all together because we all believe in that Jesus fellow and miracles and creation. we must all be gathered in our church planning how to get rid of all the homosexuals, democrats, and civil liberty. we all want a theocracy run by jerry falwell and pat robertson.

we are not afforded the right to think differently, because we are intollerant christians. we all get lumped into fundamentalist.

oh, well i guess after being lumped in with karl marx, al franken, and ralph nader the secularist must feel quite the same.

hey i've got an idea. let's listen to individuals before we start labeling. let's take a moment a realize that even though i may have some common beliefs that i share with jerry falwell i also have some major problems with his ideology and i don't want him running the country, oh yeah and micheal moore is not the anti-christ he's just a guy who makes movies with a particular view point.

a wonderful day
01.09.05 (8:19 pm)   [edit]
well it has been one month now that i have been working at WAL-MART. the experience has been mind-blowing. i have never had so many mixed feelings about a workplace experience than i have here. one moment i think the whole system is crazy and the next i find it perfectly sane. oh well that is really not what i want to write about.

the real blog is about the wonderful day i had with my family yesterday. we had a chance to visit with my second mom Marge Williams. she is the widow of my dear friend that i have been writing about as of late.

she was in texas to see her grand daughter off to Dallas Christian College, as well as visit her sine who lives about 40 minutes from me. she was escorted by her eldest daughter from oregon. her name is Cathy and she is a real kick. she got my kids hooked on knitting in a matter of about 5 minutes. she bought them yarn and knitting needles and showed them how to do a few simple stitches. she is blessed with the Williams wit and her brother Rick, myself, and her had a wonderful time toasting each other and ourselves for toasting each other.

i really love these people and feel badly that i do not do enough to keep in touch. i mean rick lives 40 minutes away and everybody has e-mail so why am i such a loser?

i think it is just the plain fact that i am an american like most americans. i am wrapped up in myself and unless it gives me immediate satisfaction i tend to ignore it. this is something i have been working on for a while and just when i think that i am getting better i find that i need a lot more work.

one last thing dear readers. while at my friends home i noticed that they do not have a television in their living room. they have a second room upstairs where they have a set, and i think i am going to suggest to my wife that we do the same thing. it was really nice to sit and talk and not have the tube going. i even did not miss play-off football which is a miracle in itself.

it's over and done
01.03.05 (9:34 am)   [edit]
another season of fatast football is over, and this year i won my league. yep, for the first time i actually won!!

it was a close call after being ahead by a long long way one other team began to creep up and gave me a great challenge. i was worried because yesterday was crucial. if the black mamabas, the advancing team, were to have another great week and i were to have an average week that would have been it. i would have lost and been very disappointed. i was #1, 16 out of 17 weeks and it would have sucked to lose.

congratulations to all my fellow coaches and i look forward to next year.
