serving others with random acts of kindness
10.19.04 (7:48 pm)   [edit]
watched a show last night that was very interesting. the benefactor which features mark cuban, owner of the dallas mavericks and internet billionaire, playing a reality tv type giving a million dollars away to whoever passes his tests.

so the test was to do random acts of kindness for the community here in dallas. the 2 teams went their seperate ways and they gave out flowers, feed the homeless, played checkers at a retirement center and one team dressed up in sumo wrestler costumes and kind of bounced aroung town making people laugh. all in all not super creative, but effective non the less.

have you ever given a homless person a meal and actually talked with them? if not i recommend it. it's a little uncomfortable and for most of us puts us way out of our element. yet, the joy you can bring to a person who no one else cares for is truly humbling.

have you ever gone to a retirement center and just talked with and old lady, or man, and just shared you time with them? i recommend it too. the stories thatt these seniors can share are unbeliveable. find out what the depression was really like, or what landing in normandy was like, or even just what thier departed spouses were like.

i will never forget the man i met in a retirement center in california. we talked for about 15 minutes one day. i was there to drop something off for my wife. she worked there, and loved every minute of it. anyway, as we talked he took hold of my hand and told me something, he said, son, live your life and remember the good. you see he was losing his memory and he wanted me to always remember the good because he knew he would not.

i left that day a new person. i had always shyed away from places like that because quite frankly old people scared me. not anymore.

random acts of kindness, we as christians should be all about that, but sadly we are busy like everyone else and time is valuable. we work hard, and we go to church sometimes 3 or 4 times a week, then there is monday night football, and softball, and the kids need to be picked up from karate, and don't forget a little "me" time on the computer. yeah, i know all the excuses and that's what they are excuses. i use them too, but how about we skip a church service and really serve, or give up a little me time, or get the kids involved too.

i don't know, but it sure sounds like something Jesus would do.

so i bought a lottery ticket today. who knows maybe i'll be the next millionaire, or maybe i'll be the next sucker who paid a buck for an ugly piece of paper. i don't regularly buy lottery tickets, in fact probably 3 or 4 in the last 6 years.

it got me thinking wht the heck will i do if i win? here are some things i thought would be cool.

first and foremost even though i am a committed christian, i will not be giving any money to a church. maybe a para-church ministry, but not a church. i have my reasons and i'll leave it at that for now.

i would definitely break of a little sumpin sumpin for the folks and family.

i've got some friends who i'd love to buy a house and season tickets to the vikings for. even though they live in dallas flying ain't that hard, and hey i've got the fundage.

my wife she gets to do whatever she wants to do, redecorate the house, quit here job, whatever.

i think i'd buy a motorcycle and a plymouth roadrunner. not a completed car, but one i could fix up myself with some buddies on the weekends.

the rest goes to the bank and investments for the rest of life and my kids.

oh yeah one more thing, and this is not my original idea it's borrowed from a great friend, any one who approaches me for some cash gets it. maybe not exactly what they want, but like $500 as long as they give me a few hours of their time so i can share the gospel with them.

what would you do?
