here's the thing...
08.25.04 (7:59 pm) [edit]
you can't choose your family, but you have to choose your friends. i believe i've choosen well. actually i believe God chose well for me. last saturday some of my friends came by. they are an awesome couple. they are super people. they both want to be more and more like jesus and they truly act out thier faith. i love these guys so much i wish they'd move next door.
so anyway, they come over and their kids are playing with our kids and my buddy says to his wife can we give shayno his gift now? she says yeah, that would be great.
so i get this box wrapped in half birthday half christmas paper, and my buddy says "ok this is your birthday and christmas present, i know it's early, but you have to have it."
i'm amazed when i open the box. i could have cried to tell the truth, but that not very cool so i chocked back the tears. what was in the box? the coolest thing ever.
a professional football jersey, not a replica, but the real deal, and not only that, but it is THE footbal jersey. #22 emmit smith, THE GREATEST RUNNING BACK OF ALL TIME !!! from the 2002 season when the NFL wore the throw-backs. it is really something.
my friend tells me he has been looking for one in my size for ever. i'm a pretty big dude ,by the by, i wear a 4 or 5 X shirt and it just isn't every day you find something this cool in my size.
so now i have the coolest jersey not only to wear at the ffl draft, but also to watch my beloved cowboys in every sunday.
God, is great, not for the jersey, but rather for giving me friends who would go to great time and greater expense to think of me in such a special way. i hope everyone has an opportunity to have friends and be a friend like this.
if you are reading this, and you know who you are, thanks again for the great gift, but more thanks for putting up with me and being my friend. in good times and bad times you have given me hope and shown jesus to me. thanks for all you wisdom and your prayers.

fantasy football
08.24.04 (3:51 pm) [edit]
|
If you have read my blog you know that i think fantasy football is a huge waste of time. You also know that I love to play fatasy football. What can I say it's a lot of fun if you don't take it too seriously, and if you are in my ffl it's a great way to hang out with friends and enjoy sunday afternoons.
So this saturday is the draft. It's kinda late, but we like it that way so we usually don't draft a player who'll be out all season with a pre-season injury, plus it's convienient for us. This year the draft is going to be at my place, and i'm really stoked about it. We'll all get together and draft our players then have a cook-out and drink some beers and talk about how great this season will be.
Then we'll talk trash to each other about how crappy their draft went and how they should just quit now and give up. Well for me it's most likely true I've finished last or second to last for 2 years now, so i've come up with a new draft strategy. I'm only drafting players i like to watch playing. for the most part stats are going to play a pretty low role in how i determine who i pick. Some will call this lunacy, others will not be so kind, but for me this is going to be great i won't have to root for players i do not like and even if they have great stats there will not be one player from Philidelphia on my team.
By the way i loath Philly.

how bored are you?
08.20.04 (10:17 pm) [edit]
I just looked up my account and my blog has been visited 860 times. This is just amazing to me. First that only a few have choosen to reply or comment and secondly that there are so many bored people.
Seriously, I'm just a regular dude with a high school education. I'm no philosopher or theolgian. In everyday life no wants to hear my opinions, yet here there are at least several hundred people who have read my opinions.
How bored do you have to be to do that. Of course I am being a little tounge in cheek about this situation. I've scanned through a dozen or so other blogs and some have made me laugh some have mademe sad. It's kind of strange that we want to read about strangers lives and thoughts, yet we probably do not even know our neighbors.
Is this the end of society as we know it? Naw, it's just the newset phase we are gong through. So, I encourage all who see this blog to continue to read my thoughts. They are honest and real, but take a few minutes today and talk to a real live person. Knock on your neighbors door and introduce yourself. Create a real relationship. Have coffee, or dinner and get to know the thoughts of someone who you can actually see, and dialouge with.
Too hard? Then go to a restaraunt and actally talk to your waiter/waitress/server. Go to a department store and talk to a clerk even if it's just about what color shirt you are planning to purchase. Do something.
I really don't mean to step on any toes, but if I did then maybe you should heed the advice.

things that look good on paper may be hard to live out
08.14.04 (2:22 pm) [edit]
So, I have new neighbors. That's great!! The house has been vacant for about 6 months and although the mortgage company who held the title was doing an OK job of maintenance it will be nice to have someone there to actually go to and say hey can you trim your trees they are ruining my patio awning.
Here's the rub. They are an unconventional couple, and by that I mean they are both transgender. So this should be no problem for me because even though I think that it is a sinful way to live your life, I also think it is no different than anyone else (which means everyone else) who sins.
BUT, I'm having a hard time with this, and it is troubleing me. You would have to really know me to understand that I really do belive that all sin is the same, and that "the church" really over states the case against homosexuality. Homosexuals are people who sin just like all of us. The only thing that makes them different is the way in which they sin. Geez, for all I know these two neighbors are more righteous than I am.
So, why am I suddenly thrown off by this little twist of providence? Why is it I am finding it hard to live out what I am convinced of? It sure sounded good when I was saying it, but now I have to live with it. I don't know. Maybe it's the fact that I am going to have to explain to my children about this particular life style sooner than I would like, or maybe I am shocked that a trangender couple would move into my "vanilla" neighborhood.
Whatever the reason, I am going to pray that God gives me the ability to be like His Son Jesus, and love these people just like I would a "traditional" couple. I hope that He give me more opportuniy to talk to and to know them, just like He did this afternoon. I hope he gives me the words to say to my children and the wisdom to now how not to offend my neighbor literally.
This is the first time in a while that I actually was shocked about something, and my prayer is going to be that Jesus allows me to show His love and help me to mature as a Son of God.

a really cool blessing
08.12.04 (1:17 pm) [edit]
I do a lot of driving for my job. All over the DFW metroplex. I may be 50 miles north of my home today and 40 miles east tommorow. I go where the work is whithin a 100 mile radius of Dallas.
For the last 5 months my wife has been using a friends car. Well the friend needs the car back and we were kind of stressing about what we were going to do. We really could not afford a car payment, and because I was unemplyed for over a year we have some BUMPS in our credit. Nothing super bad, but enough to get us a really high interest rate if we buy a car.
Long boring story short, one of my wifes friends sold us here 96 Taurus on a payment plan. The payments are affordable and we aren't paying interest and all in all I see it as a blessing from God. We needed another car and God provided us with a very nice one.
What the real lesson I think for me in this little event is that my wife and I came to the conclusion that no matter what happened we were not going to be upset. If we only had one car and had to do some major scheduling overhauls we were going to be content and thank God for the one car because we could have no car.
I'm not trying to be self-righteous and tell everyone how great I am, I'm just sharing. I look around and see the blessings that God has given my family and me and I am amazed. We live in a nice house in a nice neighborhood. We have food to eat and cloths to wear. My kids are healthy and in the big picture we are great.
I want to come to a place in my life where I can be content and teach my family to be content in plenty or in want. Just like Paul said.

Inclusivism
08.11.04 (11:02 am) [edit]
Theological term for a simple concept. God being God can and will save those whom He will save. It doesn't matter if you are reared in a Western Christian envirionment from about 1600 to present or you are a Muslim from 800 a.d. God is capable of revealing Himself and the plan of salvation to you.
I know I'll get some heads shaking left to right and some people really think this is a heresy, but I really think if you examine Biblical evidence then you at least have to give inclusivism a maybe.
Job, the Bible says he was a righteous man, some versions say he was perfect. Now we kow he was not perfect, but he was righteous. He had no clue about sacrifices or the Law, and he sure didn't know Jesus or have a concept of messiah. Yet, the Bilbe says God himself declared Job righteous. This alone has to point to a possibility that God can work in ways other than our typical tent revivals, or witnessing to co-workers.
We as western christians have a mind set that there is really only a few ways to get saved. YOu walk down an aisle at church, or the gospel is shared with you by someone and you accept Jesus in your heart.
I'm saying these are good ways to get saved, but not the only ways. Why would we want to limit God's grace in such a way, why would we think that we are so special that God wouldn't have a way for others who are not born in our culture to come to saving faith?
All I'm really convinced of is that God is God and He can and does do what He will. We should never ever think that he could not use another religion, or even a cult to bring people to saving faith.
Like I've said before and will probably say 1000 times more, there is only one way to God, but there may be many ways to Jesus, in fact I'm pretty sure there is.
